Time Magazine named Greta Thunberg “person of the year” and climate change is the news story of the year as chosen by Canadian Press.

Time Magazine named Greta Thunberg “person of the year

It’s pretty clear the “story of the year” is largely a result of the efforts of the young Sweedish activist who began her climate strikes, at 15-years-old, sitting alone outside the Sweedish Parliament in August 2018.  By December 2018 more than 20,000 students had joined protests in 270 countries.

The climate strikes on September 20 and 27th of 2019 attracted 7.6 million people at 4,500 protests in 150 countries. The climate strike in Montreal involved an estimated 500,000 people, making it the largest protest in Canadian history.

Greenest School in Canada

Staying with youth, in 2019 we literally stumbled across one of the most inspiring stories we’ve ever found on youth. While speaking at a Lacombe Composite High School/Battle River Watershed Alliance event student Darcey Cunningham and teacher Steve Schultz gave us a tour of the work of the EcoVision Club at the school.

Our CKUA Radio story on the inspiring work of the EcoVision Club at Lacombe Composite High School in Alberta.

The students have completed more than a dozen projects including a state-of-the-art solar-geothermal greenhouse, raised bed gardens and several aquaponics projects. This, in turn, inspired teachers to create more than a dozen Career and Technology Studies (CTS) courses connected to the projects. (see full story and photos)

Save the Church, Save the School

From the greenest school we go to a church in crisis that came up with one of the most inspiring and creative solutions that involved building the first net-zero church and social housing project in Canada. They saved their church, saved a school and created solar-powered homes for 16 immigrant families in Edmonotn, Alberta. (see full story and photos)
